From their first flight in or around World War I, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have made tremendous technological advancements. Apart from their widespread use in military, now including a drone target practice F-16 [1], there is a massive market for UAVs in the civilian sector. The possible areas of their operation include: Search and rescue activities Environmental surveillance Pollution detection Weather monitoring Fire control Earth mapping Coastal patrolling Border control Traffic jam resolution Infrastructure surveillance Telecommunication relay Freight delivery Crime reconnaissance Possibilities are endless. Consequent to their anticipated enhanced use, UAVs are being manufactured in ever-increasing numbers and are improving rapidly in capability. According to industry forecasts global UAV drones market is projected to reach $58.5 billion by the year 2026 spending in this field on research and development will continue to increase at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of rate 57.3% during 2022-2026. The total research investment by 2022 was projected to be over $89 billion. The integration of UAVs in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) System is, however, posing challenges and raising issues that have not been resolved satisfactorily. According to a European Defence Agency study 'the single largest hurdle to the growth of the civil UAV market is the issue of UAV operations in controlled airspace', and that 'a commercial, non-governmental UAV market is unlikely to emerge until the airspace access issue is fully resolved' [3]. It is thus certain that the need for better air traffic management will be driven by the expected phenomenal growth of the UAVs in the civil commercial sector. Discussion questions to consider: What is the current market value of UAV investment? In 2016, drone industry growth took flight when the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted hundreds of new exemptions for companies to operate drones in the U.S. through FAA Part 107. -Explain what FAR Part 107 is and how it affects the NAS as we know it. what issues do you identify will arise with integrating UAV's into commercial airports
