If I am manufacturing an item that requires cross country delivery by train, I probably want to set up my facility near a railroad. In the same way I would choose a facility near a major highway or interstate if I planned to truck my product out from the manufacturing facility to its final destination. Then there is the distance to which your distribution has to reach in order to reach your consumer. For example, if I was manufacturing rain boots, I probably would not set up my facility in Arizona. On the flip side, if I was manufacturing sun screen, I don't think I would choose Washington state as my prime location. Not that any of these things cannot be worked through.
