Getting Started

The business letter is a critically important piece of business communication that you are certain to use in your own career. Here, you will build a business letter to a prospective employer. Start by researching a few employers that might interest you. Locate their address, along with the name and contact information of the recipient.

Next, consider your talents, interests, skills, and career aspirations. What are you good at and passionate about? Prepare to describe this in a promotional way. You may make up the job title and proposed starting date.

Writing the Letter

Review pages 488-490 in your textbook, including Fig. 14.5: A Business Letter for an Internship Application. Working from this example, carefullymake your letter

Note how the writer introduces herself and outlines her experiences and aspirations. If you do not have an equal amount of experience, you will have to do the best you can with what you have.

NOTE: Formatting is a critical part of this assignment. Your letter must be formatted exactly like the textbook example. If it is not, you will lose points.

Once you are finished, read your letter aloud to check it for readability. Proof and edit carefully. Polish the document to make it as professional as possible. Your next career position may be riding on it!
