Twelve Types of Nonverbal Communication

1. Body Orientation --the degree to which we face toward or away from someone with our body, feet and head.
2. Posture -- To see if this is true, stop reading for a moment and notice how your sitting. What does your position say nonverbally about how you feel?
3. Gestures -- movements of the arms and hands. A. Illustrators: movements that accompany speech but don't stand on their own. B. Emblems: deliberate nonverbal behaviors that have a precise meaning, known to virtually everyone within a cultural group. C. Adaptors: unconscious bodily movements in response to the environment. D. Manipulators: self-touching behaviors such as fiddling with your hands.
4. Face and Eyes --most noticed parts of the body and the hardest to read due to the many expressions humans can make with their faces.
5. Voice --The way a message is spoken can give the same words many different meanings.
6. Touch --touch can communicate many messages and signal a variety of relationships. How a patient is touched by a dentist is completely different from how a mother touches her child.
7. Physical Attractiveness --Physical attractiveness affects interaction with people.
8. Clothing --conveys at least ten messages to others: economic level and background, Educational level and background, Social background, Trustworthiness, Social position, level of success, level of sophistication, moral character.
9. Distance -- One can sometimes tell how people feel towards one another simply by noting the distance between them. Intimate distance: skin contact to 18 inches. Personal Distance: 18 inches to four feet. Social Distance: four to twelve feet. Public Distance: from 12 feet outward.
10. Territoriality --Territory is stationary and is any area to which one assumes some kind of "rights." Example: your room at your house.
11. Physical Environment --The environment one creates can communicate emotion to people. Example: A spotless house with slip covers.
12. Time --Chronemics describes the study of how humans use and structure time. Example: being late for an appointment.
