Your task is to design and produce an interactive map that tells a story about the same public data set describing offstreet car parks in Melbourne that you used in the static mapping assignment data source You should explore the contents of the data set and display the data graphically using the core principles of interaction design, data graphics, and cartography you have learned during the course.
Your resulting map should contain a map that fills the screenspace and has some form of map interaction beyond the basic Mapbox interaction ie pan zoom The map must communicate a clear story about your data to an audience of Melbourne city residents.
You can elaborate on or refine the story you told in your static mapping assignment map, or you can develop a different story using the same data set.
This dataset is available in GeoJSON format, which imports nicely into Mapbox.
The fine print...
This is an individual assessed exercise, which you can start in the supervised prac session and continue in your own time.
Refer to the exercises from Pracs and combine, adapt and build upon these to design and create your own interactive map, containing at least one form of novel interaction beyond simple pan and zoom. Remember to assess your interactive map critically with reference to the principles of interaction design, as well as cartography and data graphics learned in the course, and iteratively redesign your map to improve it
For the assignment you must submit two files:
sXXXXXXindex.html your single HTML document including all your HTML and JavaScript
sXXXXXXstyle.css your CSSstyle sheet used by your HTML file
Your files must follow the above naming conventions, where XXXXXX is your The objective of this assignment is to provide you with the opportunity to
demonstrate your ability to independently apply the core design principles of
data graphics and cartography including your knowledge of map interaction
and user experience design in the context of an interactive map product. To
do this, you will need tstudent ID number.
Your submission must contain exactly one html and one css file.
Remember to explicitly refer to your CSS file in your HTML see highlighted in orange in the template here
In the submission area you need to upload these as two separate files and submit them together at one time using the add' another file option.
You should doublecheck your submission works by downloading your files from the submission area and checking they open in the browser as expected.
fully load
fill the web browser with a map unless you have also added interactive data graphics see rubric;
work for any anonymous user, ie without requiring any special passwords or logins;
include the offstreet car park data in some manner available here: data source;
contain code to incorporate map interaction which supports your data story note: this must be beyond the default Mapbox interaction of zoompan;
contain your name and student ID see the template here;
contain comments in the code that highlight your key functionality and innovations; comments can be created by adding the characters at the start of a line.
use an appropriate, potentially customdesigned basemap style ie one you created in Mapbox Studio;
have a clear and precise title;
credit the data source; and
contain other relevant map layout elements where appropriate, eg a legend.
Ensure that your develop a clean, simple design; abide by the principles of interaction design, cartography, and data graphics covered in class; and make careful use of colour.
The map may incorporate any additional spatial data used for the prac sessions or from other data sources eg from Melbourne DataLinks to an external site. or Victorian Data subject to the assignment requirements eg must load from a single HTML file with accompanying CSS for an anonymous user
You are responsible for ensuring that your submitted files work as expected. We strongly advise that you forward the files to a friend or relative to doublecheck that they open on a different computer. Some browsers will not perform in exactly the same way as others, so you should be sure your assignment works as expected using Chrome version
