1-In reading these list of megatrends, opportunities, and risks, I am immediately brought back to when I lived in Northeaster Ohio outside of Cleveland near an old port town (Ashtabula) that formerly serviced the coal and steel industries. By the time I arrived there in 2013, those industries had long died away and the flames from Cleveland's Cayahoga River Links to an external site.had also been extinguished. That said, the megatrend of circular economies and waste had not yet been addressed. As a struggling port town in the Great Lakes Region, they had not yet implemented practices and procedures for decreasing non-biodegradable waste in the port. Perhaps the responsibility is on the companies, but while their products/chemicals are still being sold, a struggling port will be less likely to regulate and dissuade companies from coming through their port for business. The risk they face, of course, is the decrease in demand overall. Through the lens of environmental sustainability, there must be a model by which they can serve the needs of a largely agricultural and less regulated area while still realizing opportunities within a greener business model.

2-I chose to highlight the paint company Sherwin-Williams. In 2011 SW won the category for "Designing Greener Chemicals" at the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards. Their innovation was a new formula for interior paint made from recycled soda bottles and other recycled material. This new paint not only checks the box for Circular economy but also reduces VOCs to lessen the negative impact on human health, all while offering the same performance as other paint lines.

For a competitor to follow in SW's footsteps, there would be a heavy investment required in engineering and sourcing of new suppliers. Recycled materials likely cost more than the "main stream" raw paint materials, and would also require the company to "forfeit" profit in favor of people and planet.

3-I decided to take a look at Lonza, which is located right in Portsmouth, NH (I literally looked at the building the other day driving). Lonza utilizes a ton of chemicals and processes - and was a key partner for moderna's COVID vaccine. Taken from Lonza'a web site: "We provide a wide range of services and products from early phase discovery to custom development and manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients to innovative dosage forms for the pharma and consumer health and nutrition industries. Our scale and resources mean we can provide a one-stop solution for our customers to help people get well, feel well, and stay well. In 2020, we supported more than 820 preclinical and clinical small and large molecules, more than 245 commercial small and large molecules and produced 230 billion capsules". In a nutshell, Lonza is huge, and is the preferred global partner for the pharmaceutical, biotech and nutrition markets. While Lonza has a significant number of chemical processes and carbon emissions, I was curious about water scarcity. Water is so detrimental not only to our lives, but also Lonza's business life. Water is the universal solvent and utilized in thousands of chemical processes. It's also used for cleaning and getting rid of waste. As I was thinking of water saving ideas for Lonza, I was happy to learn after doing some research, Lonza is very aware and adamant about water scarcity and the importance to preserve the resource as efficiently as possible. First, Lonza separates its industrial water and cooling water to avoid contamination and pollution. Second, Lonza shares that due to water saving initiatives, they did improve the water usage efficiency from 2019-2020. All too often we fail to realize how important water is - survival likely depends on it
