Followership, gender, and leadership do share a relationship and create impact. Leadership requires followership, and without understanding what the act of following entails, it is difficult to understand leaders and leadership fully. It is said that you cannot have leaders without followers. Followership is a process whereby an individual or individuals accept the influence of others to accomplish a common goal. Followership involves a power differential between the follower and the leader. Typically, followers comply with the directions and wishes of leadersthey defer to leaders' power. Followers are viewed as just as important and crucial as leaders. Both work together to help an organization function. Once there is support between leaders and followers, this helps to advance an organization's mission. Gender does play a role in leadership. Women are significantly underrepresented in major leadership positions. The barriers women encounter on their leadership journey have been dubbed the leadership labyrinth. Women's underrepresentation in elite leadership positions results from differences in leadership style and effectiveness. They believe that women lead more interpersonally oriented and less task-oriented than men in organizational studies. Gender is usually prejudiced and stereotyped women. (Northouse,2021)

Leaders may survive without followers, but their influence and effectiveness as a leader would be limited. A leader must be able to inspire and encourage others to support their vision or aims. A leader may not be able to attain their goals if they do not have followers, and their leadership may not be acknowledged or respected by others.

We know the male and female genders have fundamental variances (MultiBrief: Does Gender Really Play a Role in Leadership? n.d.) Research has shown that women often face biases and stereotypes based on their gender, making it harder for them to get into leadership roles. For example, even with the same skills and degrees, women may be seen as less skilled or bold than men. This can make it hard for women to get people to follow them and be seen as good leaders.

However, studies have shown that women may be extremely successful leaders, even outperforming males in leadership posts in certain situations. Women may have empathy, cooperation, and emotional intelligence, which may help them connect with and inspire their following. Furthermore, having a varied variety of leaders from various backgrounds and experiences helps bring a greater range of viewpoints and ideas to the table, which can eventually lead to better results.
