One area to consider is how you might deepen the session. Guilt as a theme was identified in your focusing summary (Kambewa, 2023, 4:09; Young, 2021). Throughout the session, you supported the client's discussion of guilt around scheduling and meeting her family's needs. The client recognized her mother "was a great example" of giving, yet it "completely exhausted her, and then she had nothing else to give" and "I don't want to do that" (Kambewa, 2023, 11:52). This moment is interesting. Not only is this an opportunity to point out a discrepancy between the client and her mother, but it would also be an opportunity to explore the source of guilt, which you do later in the session (24:36) and the underlying meaning or beliefs behind the client's words. Young (2021) recommended using the Inner Circle Strategy to challenge clients to go deeper. Inner circle rings are where the most effective therapy is performed (Young, 2021, p. 141). I would be curious to ask the client, "I'm wondering, was there ever a time when your mom did not help out (White & White, 2007)?" Inner circle work might surface the buried messages she received about helping. Dig into the narrative and explore. The client stated, "I can still keep my family as priority" (Kambewa, 2023, 15:14) and "I'm of worth too" (Kambewa, 2023, 15:42). Encouraging meaningful change for the client could be initiated by pointing out these two truths. They are almost like discrepancies (Young, 2021) because the are at odds for the client. From there, it would be interesting to probe with an invitation, "Tell me more about 'being of worth'." The client said, "remembering that would be important (Kambewa, 2023, 15:42). What changes would she see in her life if she remembered she is of worth too?
