Grading Matrix - Pass Criteria :(Unit -37-Advanced Civil Engineering) Learning Outcome Assessment Criteria LO1 Understand the methods and techniques used in tunneling activities LO2 Understand the methods and techniques used in hydraulic structures LO3 Understand the methods and techniques used in marine works LO4 Understand the methods and techniques used in highway construction and railway works LO5 Be able to solve problems arising from complex civil engineering activities 1.1 explain construction methods for tunneling 1.2 illustrate appropriate methods used in tunnels and shafts Tasks 1.1 1.2 2.1 2.1 explain construction methods for hydraulic structures 2.2 illustrate appropriate methods used in hydraulic structures 2.2 3.1 3.1 explain construction methods for marine works 3.2 illustrate appropriate methods used in marine works 3.2 4.1 4.1 explain construction methods for highway and railway works 4.2 illustrate appropriate methods used in highway construction and railway works 5.1 design appropriate solutions for complex civil engineering activities 5.2 produce a resource plan for civil engineering activities 4.2 5.1 5.2 Grading Matrix - M & D Criteria:(Unit -37-Advanced Civil Engineering) M & D Criteria M1 Identify and apply strategies to find appropriate solution. M2 Select / Design and apply appropriate methods / techniques. M3 Present and communicate appropriate findings. Task: Assessment Criteria / Possible Evidence 1.1: Demonstrate the factors to be considered when selecting the suitable tunneling method? (M1.1) 3.2: Demonstrate the merits and demerits of the cofferdam foundation (M1.2) 5.1: Explain in detail the construction method to mitigate the further damage to the dam. (M2) 2.1: Name the required machinery for the construction. Draw a typical neat labeled sketch of an earth dam and explain in detail the construction method. (M3.1) 4.2: Demonstrate in which ways a railway track is subjected to action of water and drainage systems used to prevent this with necessary free hand sketches. (M3.2) D1 Realistic improvements have been proposed against defined characteristics for success 1.3: Make a judgment on the appropriate method. (D1.1) 2.3: Consider the positive and negative points and give a reasoned judgment. (D1.2) D2 Substantial activities, projects or investigations have been planned, managed and organized D3 Convergent and lateral thinking have been applied 3.3: Review objectively and weigh up both positive and negative points before making a decision. (D2) 5.2: Assess the contingency plan already available with you to handle the situation with your own ideas and concepts. (D3) A Highway project has been planned in a hilly area. According to the project plans the most feasible route or trace of the proposed Highway has to cross a river and a mountain of 900m wide. As member of the design team (Senior Technical Officer) you have been requested to propose a suitable Bridge crossing and a tunnel to cross the river and mountain respectively. Assessment Tasks
