Great Lakes University In May 2012, Joan Middleton took over as director of purchasing at Great Lakes Uni- versity (GLU), a large state university located in Cleveland, Ohio. Ms. Middleton is a 2005 graduate of The Ohio State University, where she majored in purchasing Joan worked for seven years as a buyer for Honda. Upon arrival at GLU, she dis- covered that her staff was spending too much time and money on more than 180 spend categories. Consequently, she wanted to develop methods of increasing the effectiveness and the efficiency of the 180 spend categories. To accomplish this goal, she plans to move down the list of the spend categories beginning with the highest spend category, and ending with the least significant spend category THE UNIVERSITY Great Lakes is a metropolitan university providing a rich environment for en- gaged learning in a dynamic location.
