Group Project Milestone 2 Project Initiation and Planning Overview and Requirements Project Initiation and Planning are important parts of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Some of the initiation and planning phase activities include defining the problem, creating the project charter, determining project scope, and identifying risks. Your assignment is to formally kick-off your project by preparing a Systems Proposal that includes an executive summary, project charter, scope document, and WBS. The group should provide minutes of all project meetings which will be included in the submission. For your group project, please prepare a Systems Proposal that includes the following items: 1 Title Page 2 Executive summary and a problem (opportunity) statement. 3 Project charter and scope statement. 4 Work Breakdown Structure. 5 Meeting minutes for all team meetings. The following pages describe the recommended format and guidelines. (75 Points) Group Project Milestones Page 2 Title Page The title page should include the project name, group name, and names of your group members. Executive Summary A one-page summary (1-3 paragraphs) of the project, intended for a non-technical reader. The executive summary should briefly describe your project and the high level project objectives. You should also include a short discussion of the expected value that will be realized by the proposed system. You may include the problem or opportunity that the project will address. Project Charter and Scope Statement Your project charter should include the following sections: o Project Name: The name of the project o Background and Justification: Briefly discuss the business need for the system. This may include symptoms of the problem or imposed benefits of a new system. o Project Objectives: A concise description of the major objectives of the project. You may also include a high level outline discussing of some of the major features. o Assumptions: list any known assumptions about the project o Deliverables: list the high level deliverables for the project o Project Scope: A brief description explaining what is in scope and what is out of scope. The scope statement should specific any special issues and/or constraints and is typically 1-3 paragraphs in length. "Scope" refers to all the work involved in creating the products of the project and the processes used to create them. It is very important to ensure that the project team and stakeholders have the same understanding of what products the project will produce. o Project Success Criteria: list the criteria that will determine whether the project has been a success o Project Sponsor and Stakeholders: list the names of the project sponsor and major stakeholders Group Project Milestones Page 3 WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) Using your scope statement, develop a WBS for your project. A WBS is a division of a project into tasks and subtasks. The tasks are numbered to indicate their relationship to each other. You should also include a WBS dictionary for any items that need further explanation (minimum of 3). For this class you will be completing several of the following planning, analysis, design, and implementation activities: Analysis Functional Requirements Class Diagram Process Model: Use Case Diagrams and Descriptions Object Behavior Model: A Sequence Diagram for the major Use Cases Design Interface Design Software Design Controls Test Cases Implementation Although you will not be implementing your system, please include the necessary implementation activities in your overall project schedule. These activities may not be assigned to anyone and may not have a due date, but should be listed in the document for planning purposes. Meeting Minutes Document the minutes of all project meetings and other project related events associated with this milestone (date, time, team members present, topics discussed, action items). I recommend finding a template for your meeting minutes that includes action items, key decisions, etc. The meeting minutes for each team meeting will be included in your submission. Grading Criteria 1 Content (75%): The submission will be evaluated to determine if all the requirements of the milestone were met. Each requirement will be evaluated for completeness and correctness. The milestone should include the following requirements: Executive Summary: will be evaluated on succinctness and professionalism. Project Charter and Scope Statement: will be evaluated in terms of completeness of the Group Project Milestones Page 4 project name, background/justification, functionality/objectives, project scope, and expected value. WBS: will be evaluated in terms of completeness and depth of planning. For example, did the schedule include the necessary tasks, did the schedule have valid dependencies, work efforts, durations, and resource assignments? 2 Writing (10%): The writing style of the milestone will be evaluated. For example, is the document easy to understand, clear, and to the point? 3 Format (3%): The milestone will be evaluated in terms of professionalism and organization. For example, is the document professional in appearance and writing? Is the information in the document organized well? 4 Spelling and Grammar (2%): There should be few or no spelling/grammar mistakes. 5 Peer evaluation (10%): Submit a completed peer evaluation for this deliverable. Submission: 1. One member from each group will submit the completed memo to the assignment folder for week 4 -> \"Group Project Milestone 2\". Include the document as an attachment. Group Project Milestones Page 4 PARTIAL EXAMPLE Example of a problem statement, objectives and scope. Problem Statement: The current process does not allow comparisons across brand name and generic drugs Current processes do not provide drug interaction information High inventory costs (High spoilage rate) Inefficient (time consuming) inventory monitoring and physical removal of spoiled drugs Data integrity problems (mismatch between book and shelf inventory) Objectives: Improve customer service Suggest generic equivalents to customers, whenever a generic drug exists, when prescriptions are presented. Provide customized drug interaction information Reduce cost by improving the efficiency of inventory monitoring Real time update of inventory status Reduce lead time, improve demand forecasting, provide information about expiry dates of drugs Scope: The new system will address the problems by providing an online system that supports inventory tracking. The system will also provide an interface to be used for filling prescriptions. This interface will provide important drug information and offer generic equivalents when available. Project Success Criteria: The project is a success if the prescription module is delivered within << >> Example of a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). During the initial stage of the project, we will focus on a local end-user RE-LCD, which performs refurbishment, reuse, and recycling of consumer electronics processed following safe, environmentally friendly procedures. Our vision is to eventually link information of potential customers, third party body shops institutions in the US and China to RE-LCD network of online history database to improve customer satisfaction and support business by providing information much easier, faster, and safer. Project Objective: 1) Record customers' order histories and make business recommendations. 2) Improve a customer's satisfaction by providing the information of third party mobile body shop online and physical delivery service directly to customers. 3) Make quote comparison to help customers maximize their mobile phone trade-in values. 4) Connect the cellphone dealers with customers to provide phone rental service. Since RE-LCD is in the startup stage, a database of phone/phone parts buyback will help them to maximize the quantity regarding to the used phones as well as the profit of the company. In addition, the sales window will be provided to RE-LCD's customers by advertising the company's website on google search engine. Market Exclusive: There will be an automatic calculation system in which when we increase the quantity of phones to be repaired, the unit cost for repairing the phone will be reduced. There will be a credit collection system for which the more the customers pay for the service, the more credits they will earn to use in the next purchase. Besides, credits can be used as cash for the next purchase. These two systems will effectively save the money for customers. The online customer tracking system will help customers store their information in our database. They can log in from the online system, and recommendations will be sent via analyzing their preferences. Besides, they can pull their shopping history and track the order status once they submit the orders. The order information is transparent to the customer and they will know the cost to repair used phones and the unit price for the phone parts. Since we have formed the original idea for online B to C e-commence system, our next step will focus on the setup of the database as well as the design of the website. We propose the project to be completed by the end of April.
