Guide Questions Read the case and answer the guide questions provided below. Travel Around One Country in One Week Source: Resorts: Mill, R. (2012). Management and Operations, 3rd Edition. Wiley Ecotourism is one of the most interactive forms of adventure travel. One of its objectives is to interact with and learn about the lifestyle and customs of the locals. A trip to the north coast of Honduras will provide travelers with plenty of these experiences. The Bay Islands, just 40 miles off the north coast of the Caribbean Sea, offer a wide variety of activities. From diving along the world's second-largest coral reef, swimming with dolphins and sharks, horseback riding along the hills, or zipping down them via canopy lines, the Bay Islands are indeed a paradise for everyone. To learn more about the history of these islands, visitors can go to Coxen's Cave and learn about the endeavors of pirates and colonizers in this area of the country. Back on the mainland, tourists can go on a tour to the various National Parks like Lancetilla and Pico Bonito and villages inhabited by Garifunas. The Garifunas are one of the most culturally rich communities in the country (which is already saying a lot), who will make sure the visitors enjoy some of their typical food and learn their traditional dances, Punta and Yancunu. Traveling away from the Caribbean beaches, travelers can go west to the Mayan ruins. The town of Copan Ruinas currently offers more than 20 lodging options, and it's just minutes away from the National Park. Declared a Heritage of Humanity site by UNESCO, the Mayan Ruins National Park is not the largest of all Mayan ruin parks in the area, but it is indeed the remains of the "most artistically advanced and elaborate of all the Maya cities" (Garifuna Tours). Visiting Honduras is an adventure in itself, an imaginary trip to the past when the Mayan culture was at its best, a dive to the bottom of the ocean to enjoy a diverse ecosystem, and becoming (at least for a few hours) parts of an ethnic community. The more the tourist explores, the richer the experience will be. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. What are some potential issues with activities like tours to Garifuna villages or diving along the coral reefs? 2. What is ecotourism? To what extent do you think it is fair to develop the ecotourism industry in countries like Honduras? What options do you suggest? 3. Who are ecotourists? Provide best practices in eco-tourism to encourage environmentally friendly practices among its stakeholders.
