H355 Data Set: Baby and Mom

Evidence states that mothers who receive prenatal care have fewer low birth weight babies. The data below reflects birth weight for 16 babies born in June and their mother's age and whether they received prenatal care. Using this data, you are asking the questions: Is prenatal care a factor in the baby's weight? Is there a difference in age between women who receive prenatal care and women who do not receive prenatal care?

1. Enter the data into Excel. Run descriptive statistics on Baby weight and Mom's Age.

2. Determine the percentages of prenatal care.

3. Then determine if there is a correlation between baby weight and Mom's age. (hint, these 2 columns need to be next to each other so that they can be selected at once).

4. Next split the data into 2 groups, Baby weight and Mom's age of those that had prenatal care and Baby weight and Mom's age of those who did not receive prenatal care.

  • Run a t-test between the Baby weight of each group to see if there is a statistically significant difference.
  • Run a t-test between the Mom's age of each group to see if there is a statistically significant difference.

5. Address all the points of the Grading Rubric by typing your responses into the Excel file (at the bottom of the page in Excel are little tabs that say sheet 1, sheet 2, etc. If you click on these a new page of excel opens, its like having pages in a notebook).
