Employee Development

1. Assume you are a manager in your dream job (or your actual job if you have one). Outline the employee development plan you think would make your employees most successful. Use the Dell model in Figure 8.2 to structure your plan.

2. List the key topics you would like to include for the formal training classes in the program.

3. Select one of the topics and develop the training plan for it.

Employee Orientation

Work in a team of four or five for this activity.

1. Choose a company or nonprofit organization with which your team is familiar.

2. Identify topics that should be included on a recording of the organization's new employee orientation audio file that can be downloaded to an iPod or MP5 player.

3. Plan and outline the information that would be included in the presentation.

Coaching One way to be successful

as a coach is to have a positive relationship with your team members. As you develop your managerial skills, learning how to build long-term relationships of trust with your team is essential.

1. Prepares a document that outlines tips and best practices for building relationships with team members and effective coaching.

2. Identify at least three things you can do to cultivate a positive relationship with your team members.

3. Describe at least three strategies you will use to be an effective coach.
