Harry, David, and Larry work in a company that is downsizing. Employees have been offered the choice of remaining with the organization, while taking a slight pay cut and a freeze on raises for the next two fiscal years, rather than being laid off. A number of employees have chosen to quit as soon as they have found other jobs. Harry, David, and Larry have all chosen to stay.
Discussing their reasons over lunch, Harry says, "Quit? Not mel/ really have to stay here, even with less money. If I left I would lose my retirement after all the time l've put in. At this point, I could never start over at a new job and build up enough to retire. I have to look out for myself. And with the economy so bad, it would be too hard to find another decent job anyway."
David responds, 'Yeah, I know what you mean. I haven't been here as long as you have so I don't have much invested in retirement. But the company sent me to school for this job, and they've also been paying for my continuing education. I could never have gotten all this training on my own. They expect a minimum commitment in this job title to repay that investment. I really owe them a lot. I feel like I should stay and make use of what theyve taught me."
Larry agrees: "It's like we are all part of a big family here. It's a good company; so many other places are just laying people off to save money or to keep from going out of business. At least here they came up with a way for us to keep our jobs. So we all get paid a bit less; that's better than all of us being unemployed. I believe in this company, so I really want to stay."
David's statements reflect what kind of employee commitment?
A. Affective commitment
B. Continuance commitment
C. Normative commitment
D. Obligation commitment
