- Topics of civic concern involve issues of local, national, and global importance including abortion, affirmative action, gender issues, gun control, immigration, marriage equality, religious freedom, racism, discrimination, social justice, war and peace, and welfare.
- Analyze the critical conversation using theories fromMyer Part TwoSocial Thinking (Modules 3-9):self-concept, self-serving bias, unrealistic optimism, narcissism, self-esteem, self-efficacy, fundamental attribution error, over-estimating accuracy of one's judgments, constructing memories, illusory correlation, expectations, attitudes, and behaviors.
Topics of Civic Concern: Topics of civic concern involve issues of local, national, and global importance including abortion affirmative action gender issues gun control immigration marriage equality religious freedom racism, discrimination social justice war and peace welfare
Students will have a total of 2 separate critical conversations, each 30 minutes in length. Students will discuss a different controversial topic of civic concern (see topics of civic concern below) with two different individuals of their choice who hold a differing position on the issue than them and are at least 18 years old. This is an opportunity for students to exchange ideas and question their own beliefs, as well as think critically about course content and apply it to an interaction with someone who holds differing beliefs and attitudes.
