Original Question: You just saw an ad on television that states the majority of the population would vote to make smoking illegal. The poll that is referenced shows 53% of those asked supported making smoking illegal. In the fine print at the bottom of the screen, you see that the margin of error is +/- 3%. What is your reaction? Explain.

Follow-up Question: By looking at the poll numbers and the margin of error, I can see that the poll has a high level of accuracy behind it with a low margin of error of +/- 3%. Lind, Marchal, & Wathen (2015) describe that, There is a trade-off between the margin of error and sample size. A small margin of error will require a larger sample and more money and time to collect the sample. A larger margin of error will permit a smaller sample and result in a wider confidence interval. (p. 301). With this low margin of error, a fairly large amount of people were contacted to gain their thoughts on making smoking illegal. Additionally, I can see that taking the negative margin of error side, 50% of the population supported making smoking illegal. The percentage of people that support making smoking illegal could also increase by adding the + 3% margin of error bringing the percentage to 56%. A similar type of polling is done in elections to predict who will win an election. Just as in the example of the poll regarding making smoking illegal, there is a margin of error that decreases as the sample size goes up and it makes the data more true to the total population.
