Original Question: You just saw an ad on television that states the majority of the population would vote to make smoking illegal. The poll that is referenced shows 53% of those asked supported making smoking illegal. In the fine print at the bottom of the screen, you see that the margin of error is +/- 3%. What is your reaction? Explain.

Follow-up Question: By looking at the poll numbers and the margin of error, I can see that the poll has a high level of accuracy behind it with a low margin of error of +/- 3%. Lind, Marchal, & Wathen (2015) describe that, There is a trade-off between the margin of error and sample size. A small margin of error will require a larger sample and more money and time to collect the sample. A larger margin of error will permit a smaller sample and result in a wider confidence interval. (p. 301). With this low margin of error, a fairly large amount of people were contacted to gain their thoughts on making smoking illegal. Additionally, I can see that taking the negative margin of error side, 50% of the population supported making smoking illegal. The percentage of people that support making smoking illegal could also increase by adding the + 3% margin of error bringing the percentage to 56%. A similar type of polling is done in elections to predict who will win an election. Just as in the example of the poll regarding making smoking illegal, there is a margin of error that decreases as the sample size goes up and it makes the data more true to the total population.

Question 3 that needs to be answered: What the sampling frame play any role in terms of collecting data from appropriate sample?

Q4: A survey is being planned to determine the average amount of time preschool children watch television. A pilot survey indicated that the mean time per week is 12 hours, with a standard deviation of 3 hours. It is desired to estimate the mean viewing time within one-quarter hour. The 0.95 degree of confidence is to be used. How do you calculate how many preschool children should be surveyed? Why is it important to make sure your sample size is sufficient?
