"Have to Vs. Want To" Participation Activity:

Directions:

PART 1:

  • For the first part, create 2 lists:Write out everything you can think of that you "have to do" in your day-to-day life on one side. On the other side, write down everything you can think of that you "want to do" in your day-to-day life.
  • Be sure to include sexual behaviors, experiences, communications and decisions in your lists as well.

PART 2:

  • After you have made these lists, answer the following questions below in paragraph form, ( each paragraph consists of a minimum of 5 sentences) they have to be detailed and professional:
  1. Are these things you really "have to do" in life or are these things you just think you "have to do?" Why or why not?
  2. Ultimately the only thing that is required once we are born is that we die. In fact, the probability of our dying is 100/100. Technically, this is the only thing we HAVE to do in this lifetime, and all other behaviors are things that we WANT to do to LIVE. In this way the things you "want to do" are directly related to what you want to do to live. Therefore, try thinking of things you "have to do" as being options; think about why you do them. Is it related to feelings of pressure from others (friends, peers, society, partners, bosses, supervisors, teachers, parents, etc.) making you feel like we "have to do" them? Comment on this.
  3. If something on your "have to do" list is there because it is something you really want to do, that is fine, but if you find that it is someone else's want for you, then reconsider and explore your motivations and reasons for having it on your "have to do" list. Is this something that can be moved to your "want to do" list or should it be removed all together?
