Heat of Fusion of Ice

Physics 231

At the end of the lab experiment please clean your table and wait for the instructor to check you out! All the group partners must be present. Thank you.

Equipment:

universal table clamp short steel rod
thermometer clamp thermometer
calorimeter with lid stirrer
electronic balance ice from ice maker in lab

Objective:

  • Determine the latent heat of fusion of ice.

Background:

When ice is placed in water, the heat from the water will increase the temperature of the ice until it reaches 0C. At that point, the temperature of the ice will not increase when heat is added, but the ice will begin to melt. The amount of heat required to melt a given mass of ice at 0C is a constant: the latent heat of fusion. To determine the latent heat of fusion of ice, one must use a calorimeter to determine the heat gained by the ice.Heat of Fusion of Ice - Data & Discussion Sheet

Name:________________________________________Date: _________________________

Data table:

m1 (mass of cup and stirrer) (g)
m (mass of water initially in calorimeter) (g)
Ti (initial temperature) (C)
M (mass of ice) (g)
Tf (final temperature) (C)

Discussion/Conclusions (To be done individually.)

Standard value: Lf = 79.7 cal/g Calculate error.

  1. The procedure specified DRY ice cubes. How would the results be impacted if the ice cubes had a film of liquid water on them?

  1. The average initial temperature of the ice is assumed to be -15C. How would the results be impacted if the average initial temperature of the ice was -10C?
