Helen is 20 and has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. A friend has encouraged Helen to approach Melbourne City Centre for support to talk to her mum (Ellie) and Dad (Con) and convince them that she can leave home and look after herself.
Helen says that it is urgent that it be sorted out very soon as she has found a specialist disability rental apartment within her price range. Helen will need to place a rental deposit within the next 3 weeks to secure this accommodation. She would need to investigate if she will be eligible for financial accommodation assistance within her existing NDIS package; which will also help with some modifications that need to be made specifically for Helen's needs I'm Helen Christopoulos, and I have MS. My life has been pretty ordinary up until I was diagnosed with this MS. I have had MS for three years. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with depression and my GP prescribed anti-depressants. But I found they made me drowsy, so I stopped taking them. I do not work but I always thought I would like to work with older people. I think of myself as a lesbian, but I haven't had a relationship beyond a few dates in high school. My father would be shocked if he knew.My grandmother left me money which will allow me to place a deposit and will help towards rent as I want to live on my own in assisted disability rental accommodation. Just last week, I told them that I was going to use the money that my grandmother left me to move into a flat. They were really upset, I think they feel it's their responsibility to take care of me, but I want to lead my own life. I would like my parents to support me, as I can't do it alone. My family seem to be more afraid of the MS than I am. I used to meet regularly with three school friends to go out to dinner, a movie or to a concert. Lately, I haven't felt like going out, as my mobility isn't great and I'm in a wheelchair a lot of the time
