1. THE BIG QUESTION: You are getting dressed for school and you must decide what to wear. You have 3 button-up shirts and 6 T-shirts, and 4 sweatshirts. You also have 4 pairs of shorts and 8 pair of long pants. For shoes you have 5 pair of shoes. In this activity we will determine the number outfits we could create

A. Can you select more than one shirt?

B. How many total shirts do you have to choose from?

C. How did we derive the total number of choices for a shirt?

(THE SUM RULE:If the list to count can be split into k disjoint pieces of size n1, n2, ..., and nk- then the count for the entire list is n1+ n2+ ...+ nk. In terms of sets, we can write as: n(A B C ... Z) = n(A) + n(B) + n(C) + ...+ n(Z).HINT:When the parts are connected by"either/or"youaddthe sizes to get the total.)

D. How many choices of shirts do you have?

E. Once you chosen your shirt - paint/shorts combination, complete outfits are possible (shirt, paints/shorts, and shoes)?
