In their book, "Nonprofit Governance," Cornforth and Brown discuss the "escalation in research from different theoretical on nonprofit governance in general, and on nonprofit boards in particular (Cornforth & Brown, 2014). Critiquing governance through the lenses of democratic and critical perspectives, the authors argue that an organization's ability to fulfill its mission depends largely on the capacity and effectiveness of its governance and the ability of the board of directors to influence the productivity of the executive director and the management team.
