I need guidance on techniques to refer multiple sources (books, formal studies, PhD thesis etc) and use it for college assignments. In the example below, how did the writer know about the study? where and how the writer found that info?

For example: According to the study conducted by Bonsu et al (2018), cross-cultural transformational leadership is one of the effective leadership styles in the 21st century with improved people skills and efficient/effective knowledge sharing to his subordinates. Moreover, Bonsu (2018) stated that the future of a globally competitive organization lies in how well the leaders are trained to be cross-culturally competent.
