Consider that a membrane separating two compartments A and B containing a solution with the drug Ibuprofen (Advil) in a volume equal to VA and VB (Figure 1), respectively. The initial concentration of ibuprofen in compartment A and B is CA,0 and CB,0 respectively. The concentration of Ibuprofen in compartment A differs from that in compartment B. The membrane has a permeability P (cm/s) to the drug and an exchange surface equal to S (cm^2). The values of the system parameters are shown in Table 1.
Exercise:
a) Write the mass balance for the drug Ibuprofen in compartment A.
b) Write the total mass balance for the drug Ibuprofen.
c) Determine the time profile of the drug in point a) and determine the permeability of the membrane with the experimental data reported in Table 2.
d) Create a graph of the temp profile of Ca, Cb and the flux through the membrane expressed in terms of g/cm^2*h (with Polymath)
