StatCrunch Assignment #4
DIRECTIONS: Please see Part 2 of the Activity notes for instructions on using StatCrunch. Copy and paste your ouput from StatCrunch into a Word or Adobe (pdf) file, then type your answers to the questions that follow.
An ecology class did a project to determine the distance a car will travel on 1 gallon of gas at different rates of speed. A local dealer loaned the class a new Jeep Cherokee. The car was given 1 gallon of gasoline and driven around a level track at a constant speed until it ran out of gas. The following data were obtained.
Speed in MPH (x) | 30 | 35 | 40 | 45 | 50 | 55 | 60 | 65 | 70 | 75 | 80 |
Distance in Miles (Y) | 36 | 33 | 34 | 32.5 | 31 | 32 | 30 | 29.5 | 26.5 | 27 | 24.5 |
Part a: Use StatCrunch to obtain the following (It is NOT necessary to find these by-hand):
1. A scatterplot of the data.
2. The linear correlation coefficient, r and p-value.
3. The equation of the "line of best fit" and a fitted line plot.
Part b: Based upon the results obtained in part a:
1. Is there evidence of linear correlation between the two variables? Is the direction of association positive or negative?Interpret the meaning of this relationship in thecontext of this problem.Explain your answers using the value of r (Pearson correlation), the p-value, and the scatterplot.
2. Find two ordered pairs on the fitted line plot. Be sure to show your work for these calculations. Do this algebraically by substituting endpoints from the "line of best fit" into the regression equation.
3. Determine the distance the Jeep could travel at 70 mph. Show your work and interpret the meaning of your answer.
4. Estimate the speed the Jeep was traveling if it ran out of gas after 35 miles. Do this either algebraically or graphically.
5. Determine the distance a Honda Civic could travel at 58 mph.
