The South Kyle onshore windfarm, situated 50 km south of Glasgow, was opened in June 2023. It has 50 turbines with a total installed capacity of 240 MW.
Q1- The average wind speed at the site is around 10 m s-1. How does the power in the wind relate to the wind speed?
Is it proportional to: the wind speed? the square of the wind speed? the cube of the wind speed?
Q2- The windfarm's website states that it will be able to generate enough electricity for 190 000 homes. In 2021 the average domestic household electricity consumption in Scotland was 3300 kWh. Using this figure calculate the annual electricity generation of the windfarm in GWh.
Q3 (i) - Explain the meaning of the term capacity factor in the context of electricity generation.
(ii) Calculate the capacity factor that has been used in estimating the total annual electricity output of the windfarm.
Q4 (i) The windfarm has been sold by its construction company Vatenfall to an operating company for 320 million. Using this figure as an estimate of its total construction cost, calculate the capital cost per kW of turbine capacity. Calculate the capital cost per kW of turbine capacity. Give your answer to 2 significant figures.
(ii) The construction period can be considered as short. If the 320 million is borrowed over a period of 25 years at a discount rate of 8%, then the annual capital repayment will be 94 per 1000 borrowed. Calculate the annual repayment on the total capital cost in million per year.
(iii) Calculate the annual capital repayment per kilowatt hour of electricity generated in pence per kWh.
(iv) If the operation and maintenance costs are 1.4 pence per kilowatt hour, show that the total cost of the electricity is about 6.2 pence per kWh.
