BAKUNZIBAKE UGANDA LTD Bakunzibake (U) Ltd is a milk product manufacturing company that has been operating in Western Uganda for the last 10 years. It is structured into three divisions specializing in three products. The Vaniyo division produces a blend of vanilla flavoured yoghurt; Chocomint division that produces chocolate flavoured ice cream; and Miko division that produces long life milk. The company ahd an average of 200 employees in 2021. The companys strategic goal is to increase net profit by 30% per annum for the next five years using product innovation strategies. Over the last one year (2021) the company has been facing a number of significant challenges. Firstly, the company lost 50 of its staff from the Vaniyo division. Secondly, the company experienced very low level of productivity due to frequent breakdown of the old machinery, using old and inefficient technology. As a result, total revenue of UGX 100 billion in 2020 decreased by 20% in 2021, while, despite staff turnover, total pay and benefits increased to UGX 5 billion in the same year, while operating expenses grew to 50% of total revenue . An exit interview held with the employees also revealed serious problems with the way jobs were defined and executed. Workers who exited the company asserted that work processes in Bakunzibake (U) Ltd are overly specialized and repetitive. Supervisors often imposed detailed work procedures that are perceived by employees as being unnecessary. Many of the tasks assigned to workers are vague and overlap from one worker to the other. Workers often argue that the many detailed work procedures make it difficult for them to determine if their work makes real contribution to the bottom line and supervisors do not help them in this regard. The production manager in Vaniyo department, for example, argues that her department, comprising five specialists, is understaffed. She believes that she needs an additional five staff. The finance manager however objects to this arguing that an increase would significantly increase staff costs which is already too high.
