"Help me to respond to this discussion post, please."
1. I think that the federal or state government should not issue mandates via laws, regulations, etc. compelling certain types of businesses to either make certain business decisions or refrain from making certain business decisions based upon what is best for society. My reasoning behind this is that I think it would not be right for the government to issue mandates compelling businesses to act in a certain way. I think that companies should be able to do whatever they please whether it is socially responsible or not. At the end of the day if a company decides to not be socially responsible it might not succeed or they face its own consequences based on its own decisions. In a way, it would almost feel like losing a little bit of freedom. I think it would be wise for companies to be socially responsible but I do not think the government should mandate laws on this.
2. This question is slightly different as we are dealing with fossil fuels which are known to not be beneficial to the environment. I do not necessarily think the government should require businesses to divest themselves of fossil fuel investments. I can definitely see a world where this happens though and could possibly get behind it with the right plan in place. My reasoning comes back to the business being able to invest how they please, but at what cost to the environment is the issue.
