Lab 7: Build a Circuit 1. This simulation allows you to experiment with the components of a circuit and learn about how current moves through a simple circuit. To access the simulation, use the Pyet, simulation found at: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/circuit-construction-kit-dc/latest/circuit-construction-kit- dc en.html You will need to run the simulation on your computer; most systems will simply open the simulation, but you may need to download it and run it to get the simulation to work. The Phet website is well known and safe. Downloading and using the simulations on this site will not harm your computer. 2. Select the simulation labeled "Intro". Select "Conventional" under the heading "Current" in the options on the right hand side. Drag and drop the circuit components on the left hand side to create a simple circuit that contains a battery, a lightbulb, and a switch. Use the wire (as many pieces as needed) to connect the other components. Sketch the circuit that you constructed below. 3. Now close the switch by clicking on the grey circle. Describe what happens. 4. Use the Voltmeter to determine the voltage of the battery. Record your answer here: An Ammeter measure the value of the current. Use the ammeter to find the current and record your answer here: 6. Try measuring the current in different places around the circuit. Does it change? Why or why not? (Hint: Think about conservation laws here!) 7. Knowing the voltage and the value of the current, calculate the resistance in the circuit using Ohm's law. Show your work below. Record your answer here: 8. Now, add one resistor to the circuit. Sketch your new circuit here: 9. Close the switch and describe what happens. Does the lightbulb as brightly? Why or why not? 10. Measure the voltage of the battery using the voltmeter. Record your value here: Has the voltage changed? Why or why not? 11- Measure the current in the circuit using the ammeter. Record your value here: Has the current changed? Why or why not? 12. Calculate the resistance in the circuit using Ohm's law. Record your value here: 13. You found the resistance of the lightbulb in question 7. Using that value and the value for the resistance you just calculated in question 12, find the resistance of the resistor. Record your answer bere: 14. Summarize what you learned about circuits and Ohm's law from doing this lab. (3-5 sentences)
