The article that I selected is in relation to China and missing second quarter GDP expectations. From a forecasted 1% growth, the article explains that China's GDP had grown only 0.4% from a year ago (Cheng, 2022), and the main reason has been primarily Covid. Though Covid is not as nearly prevalent now days as before, measures have again been put in place by the Chinese government to control the spread across the nation, greatly affecting its GDP.
But there are a considerable number of factors that closely contribute to the gross domestic product of China that must be considered such as the national income, net domestic product, inflation, as well as personal and disposable income available of the population. Unfortunately, unemployment has rose considerably to 19.3% for those aged 16 to 24 across the nation's 31 largest cities (Cheng, 2022). It's unclear as to why but contrarily, retail sales provided by e-commerce has increased despite the level of production decreasing in relation to the standing covid measures in place. With the level of production decreasing in several areas, the slight rise in GDP only masks what the real GDP could be. Globally, inflation has increased and while there have been mentioned efforts by China to downplay its own levels by comparing theirs to the United States, there is doubt that increasing interest rates and prices are a good sign.
Currently if interest rates continued to rise, I don't believe it would do a favors to China's nominal and real GDP as it would mean that numerous businesses that have garnered massive debts would have to pay them back in larger amounts just to stay afloat and investors would be less willing invest in business with higher interest rates. Though a decrease in taxes would be beneficial and ease the pressures of additional costs added by inflation and interest rates, it would be doubtful that the nation's development of infrastructure would be sustainable as it would lower the government's ability to provide adequate services.
