here is my research question and hypothesis Research questions: For our research project we intend to explore the major motivations for shopping sustainably as well as what barriers exist for doing so. For our purposes sustainable shopping entails thrifting or buying secondhand as well as purchasing from retailers that use environmentally friendly business practices such as sustainable sourcing of materials and labor, biodegradable or recyclable packaging, and reduced energy consumption. When looking into the field of fast fashion and thrifting, we are thinking that a survey would be the best way to assess the motivations and limitations. Through this survey, we would include questions about what the motivations and barriers are to thrifting, and if people are buying from fast fashion why they are choosing to do so. We also want the survey to be informational, so we want to offer the options for shopping sustainably and some examples of stores that are sustainable, particularly that there are online thrifting options. Hypothesis: We believe that there are fashion and environment related motivations for shopping sustainably. Along with that, we believe there to be social stigma related barriers to buying clothes second hand, however the practice is also often utilized to fortify one's own "green" identity (Yan 2015). We believe that financial factors function similarly, acting as both a motivating factor and a barrier to shopping sustainably. Generally, thrifting is more inexpensive than shopping firsthand, however, sustainable firsthand shopping brands are generally very expensive which acts as a deterrent for individuals.
