Introduction to Finance T12016 Page 4 of 26 Olympia College Assignment Diploma in Business Management ASSIGNMENT Title: MAA Group Berhad Scenario MAA Group Berhad (\"MAAG\") is a wholly owned Malaysian investment holding company operating in the Financial Services Sector and is listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia. MAAG has long been an industry player with its first appearance in 1968 through Malaysian American Assurance Company Berhad (\"MAAB\"), which was incorporated as a public listed company principally engaged in the General and Life insurance businesses. In 2006, MAAG teamed up with Solidarity Company BSC (C) from Bahrain through a joint-venture to establish an Islamic Insurance (Takaful) Company in Malaysia. MAA Takaful Berhad is today the leading Takaful operator in Malaysia of investmentlinked takaful policies, sold via its 10,000 agents and 9 branches throughout Malaysia. As at end December 2013, the Group's total assets amounted to RM1.36 billion. However, MAA Group Bhd is in danger of losing its listing status as it may not have enough funds left following the sale of its conventional insurance arm, Malaysian Assurance Alliance Bhd (MAA). MAAG blames its problem on the new Islamic Financial Services Act, 2013 (IFSA) which restricts MAA Group's activities, as the holding company of MAA Takaful, to the financial services sector that is expensive and something that the group can ill afford. They argued that MAA Group's predicament is unique as it is not financially distressed, but that its hands are tied by the IFSA. The PN17 classification was designed for companies that are in trouble. However, MAAG have no debts, relatively cash rich but at the same time they are also governed by the central bank unlike all the other PN17 classified companies. Following the sale of MAA Assurance and its subsidiaries, MAA Group has been classified under PN17 for not having a core business. Introduction to Finance T12016 Page 5 of 26 Olympia College Assignment Diploma in Business Management Its two remaining businesses are in MAA Takaful and MAAKL Mutual Bhd, a unit trust company, which are still small in terms of contribution to the group's performance.
