Hi Everyone,
For this week's discussion, I chose "Therapy Dogs International" as my topic simply because I love dogs and think theyhave a huge positive impact on our emotional well-being. I also found this site really interesting because it showed all the programs that they are a part of, including nursing homes, schools, hospices, libraries, and even disaster relief (Therapy Dogs International, 2023). In healthcare settings, therapy dogs are often used to provide distraction and comfort to individuals undergoing medical procedures or coping with chronic pain. The presence of a dog can shift focus away from discomfort and contribute to a more positive experience. For individuals in long-term care facilities, hospitals, or other institutions, therapy dogs can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and provide a sense of connection to the outside world. One thing I'd want others to know that's found on the website is the training and certification process for both the dogs and their handlers. There are evaluators located in every state and many registration requirements in order to qualify as a potential therapy dog handler. Learning more about the training and certification process emphasizes the importance of responsible and ethical practices in the use of therapy dogs. It ensures that therapy dog teams are well-prepared to provide the intended benefits in a safe and professional manner. The greatest impact this information had on me is the fact that knowing therapy dogs are trained to provide emotional support, reduce stress, and enhance well-being. Understanding their positive impact on individuals in healthcare, educational, and community settings highlights their value in promoting mental and emotional health (Gee et al., 2021).
