1. The principal point can be accepted as the nadir position. (the center of the frame is the center point directly below the camera) 2. The flight altitude above the base of the object can be precisely determined. 3. Both the top and base of the object are clearly visible. 4. The degree of image displacement must be great enough to be accurately measured with available equipment, e.g. an engineer's ruler. If all of these conditions are met, the equation for the displacement method is: h = d H / r where h is the height of the object, H is the altitude of aircraft, d is the length of the displaced object on the photo, and r is the radial distance from the photo nadir to the top of the object on the photo.

Question 1: On an aerial photograph, the distance from the nadir to the top of a displaced tree is measured as 4.00 inches. The tree itself is 340 feet above the ground. If the photograph was taken from a flying height of 4,500 feet, how long would you expect the displacement of the object on the photograph be?
