Hi, my name is Zaira Abdallah. I was born in India and came to the United States with my parents 10 years ago. I am currently attending college to become an elementary school teacher. I plan on returning to India when I graduate. My parents have arranged a marriage for me with a family friend's son who attends the same college. I was a victim of sexual assault. Due to this, I am nervous around people I don't know. I am worried about running into my attacker because of my community's response to the rape. They looked at me as if it was my fault. I became pregnant with the rapist's child. I gave him up because I felt I couldn't care for him properly. I have been bullied and made fun of because I am Muslim. I feel alienated from my peers, as I struggle with language and cultural barriers. I don't feel my family and I are accepted here. My depression is at an all-time high due to the sociocultural issues I am struggling with. It's hard to find people to connect with because my college is predominately white. I can't find the resources that I need. I can't practice my religious beliefs openly. I have little time to worry about my health. I am disconnected from my culture due to eating copious amounts of American food. Those are the only options available to me at college. I still think about the baby I gave up, and I know I have a lot of guilt.
