When a small weight, commonly referred to as a pendulum bob or simply a bob, is suspended from a stand by a piece ofstring and set into motion, the period of oscillation of the pendulum is described by the equation: L T = 2' E ' ,III'M'II! of rm where L is the distanCe frum the centre of the bob to the point of suspension L of the string. Squaring both sides of the equation gives T2 = 4.1%} g = (4.12/g) L which is in the form of y = ms+ c. Thus a graph ol'T2 versus L will have a slope, m, of4Z/g. . .. ,. c m: 1. From the box of masses select any mass greater than 50 grams. Set up a pendulum as shown above with the length of L being approximately 70 cm and measure the value L Record the value of L in a table. 2. Pull the bob to one side, release and measure the time for 20 complete oscillations. One complete oscillation is from position A to C and back to A. Record the time, t, in a table and repeat the procedure two more times. Take the average ofyour three recorded values and divide by 20 [or whatever number of oscillations you have timed] to get the period, T. of one oscillation. Record this value and in another column record the calculated value of T2. Note: you have the option of changing the number of oscillations that you will time. If the pendulum is moving very fast because it is short, then you might increase the number or if the pendulum is long and the rate is slow, you may decrease the number ofoscillations. 3. Change the value of L by either shortening or lengthening the pendulum by about 10 cm. recording the new value of L. Repeat the procedure in 2 above. 4. Repeat the experiment to obtain a total of six values of L and T2.
