Competencies can help to determine the value of the position to the organization, how the position compares to external markets, and how well the employee is providing the value expected. Using competencies can allow organizations to create equitable metrics that can be quantified for use in compensation determination and continued for use in pay evaluations. Internally, this can provide structure for determining the worth of the position and the employee and whether they align. Tracking these metrics in this way can remove bias and improve perceptions of fairness within the organization. Additionally, using competency metrics can help determine where to invest in the employee for development and when it is appropriate to increase their compensation. Externally, using competencies can help to see equivalent jobs in the market, even when a position is unique and not easily comparable in the market. When comparing compensation from the outside market, competencies can help to see which positions are most valuable to the organization and where they should aim their compensation packages to be most competitive to bring in the best talent and retain them. Competencies help an organization to know what they want, what the employee is and needs, and how the market impacts both in determining what compensation to offer.
