Home Stay was an initiative of Anil Anand, with the aim of providing home-like comfort to its customers. Anil's son, Akash, was appointed the hotel manager. Akash felt that that the hotel should not only offer a comfortable stay to its customers, but also an amicable and positive working condition for its employees. Therefore, he decided to design a recreational room meant exclusively for the employees, where they could engage in fun-filled activities and as well relax in-between the work schedule. Akash opines that only when the hotel employees felt happy and content with their work, would they serve others with dedication. He believed that when employees are treated properly, they develop a sense of belonging and loyalty towards the organization-which ensures higher rate of employee retention and a lot more employee commitment. Akash 023/05/20 also, made it a point to interact on a one-on-one basis with the employees regularly, talking about not just work, but life otherwise encompassing the problems they might be facing in their everyday life. Akash would organize monthly picnics where all the employees and their families would get the chance to socialize and interact with one another, so that the feeling of being one family would be reinforced. Akash's managerial style had positive impact on the organization's turnover rate making it lower than usual. Employees were seldom laid off, and in the event of accident or injury, the department or allotted tasks of the employee(s) would be changed to a more suitable job within the organization The all-round training provided to the hotel's employees would come in handy in such cases. Akash believed in providing his employees autonomy at work. This meant that the employees had the freedom to make their decisions within the framework of their job. He did not enforce his ideas or command the ways of working. Akash felt that all the employees are adults and their judgment about their roles and responsibilities deserved to be trusted. He acted more like a guide than a supervisor But the result of this was low productivity on the part of the employees. It turned out, they got a little too comfortable at their workplace, and since Akash did not do much to discipline them or set any target for them to fulfil, they got a little too carried away by the freedom they were given. Slowly with time, the hotel started losing out its customers, owing to its sloppy services. It was then that Anil decided to get in a professional to handle the task of managing the hotel. The newly appointed manager, 2.02 Rohit Kalra had pursued his degree in management. 2023/0 His way of working was drastically different from that of Akash's. Unlike his predecessor, Rohit believed that employees perceive the passive attitude of a lenient manager as a weakness, and hence, tend to overlook and not show respect towards the manager. Therefore, when Rohit took over, he revolutionized the way things at Home Stay functioned. Each employee specialized at a task, and so he/she, clearly, belonged to a set department Each department had its own set of targets or tasks to complete. All employees were governed by a universal set of policies. The recreational room that was built for employees was converted into fitness and entertainment rooms for the guests. In case employees failed to fulfill their set target or satisfactorily complete the task given to them, they would be given a warning If there was no improvement in performance post warning, they would be fired. Rohit believed that training everyone in all aspects was a waste of time and only resulted in sub- 20-2021h7/5 standard quality of work, as not everyone is meant for or good at all kinds of work. Therefore, he focused on specializing i.e. the employee would be trained to become better at his area of expertise or interest. A register was maintained to record the work done by each employee. Based on this, performance was reviewed at the end of each month and bonuses or penalties were awarded accordingly. Meetings were held at the end of each week to review progress and discuss any issues that needed attention. Rohit also preferred all decision to be run through him. He had established a clear set of policies that the organization and its employees were expected to follow. Although he was open to ideas and suggestions, the end verdict was always his, in order to ensure that all decisions that were taken were in harmony with the organization's philosophy and policies. While the hotel witnessed a great upsurge in its clientele, with more and more customers going back satisfied and recommending the hotel's services to more people, the employee turnover also increased.
