How can I respond whether I agree or disagree with the below post?
Statistics can be a bit of a mess from time to time. In theory, stats should always be a good representation of overall data for whatever study they might be used for or activity. But statistics don't always work the way that we want them to. When people put too much trust into stats or polls, there can be consequences that are very real.
Brandon Staley is a great example of someone who might generally put too much faith into stats. Brandon Staley is a head coach in the National Football League for the Los Angeles Chargers. He is generally known as a "stats guy". Meaning, that he makes a lot of decisions in football based on statistics. Many people have commented on what many would call "questionable" play calling, because of decisions he has made based on statistical data. Going for it on 4th down on his own 35 because stats say he has an 85% chance of making a first down if he runs the ball. But when the game is on the line, and you fall into the 15% that don't make it, you have very angry fans.
Our text and the article both do a great job analyzing graphs and how statistical data in graphs need to be properly represented in order to get the most accurate information across. Leaving off little details like y axis data, or making slight data changes look like big data changes in graphics depicted can be very dangerous as well. Our book does a great job explaining how one needs to be careful when selecting a graphic to use or type of bar or chart, as sometimes the information can be missed and important information might not be available for all to see. (Figure 5.14)
In our lecture, we discussed polling as well. I remember during the 2016 presidential election (Business Insider) Polls lead people to believe that Hillary Clinton would have a clear path to victory during the 2016 presidential election, but that wasn't the case. President Donald Trump was able to win the election because the polls, were just not accurate. These inaccuracies might not only show misrepresentation of things like a presidential election, but for other trending issues that voters might vote on.
When reviewing statistical data, be careful. Generalization or overrepresentation of one group or particular group of people can negatively affect the outcome of what you are trying to collect data on. I do this constantly, because I can generally eat more than the average person, whenever I have guests, I always purchase way too much food or prepare too much of it. Because if I am accounting for 10 people, I generally account for 10 of ME. Which always means I am stuck with too many leftovers.
