You have been working as a new graduate nurse practitioner in a rural hospital alongside Nurse Mary. The hospital had seen a surge of patients over the last year. You and Mary often work through lunch and stay late to document on the patients. Nurse Mary is an excellent intensive care nurse. However, in the last several months, you have heard several comments regarding patients that sound unsympathetic. You have also felt exhausted lately and have noticed that you are caring for multiple very-complex patients with limited hospital resources and collaboration with the physician. Today, Nurse Mary states, "The patient in room #3 was admitted for acute respiratory failure secondary to influenza pneumonia. Now I have to take care of them and put myself at risk because they didn't get the vaccine." A few moments later, Nurse Mary stated, "the patient in room #2 is so big, I am not sure how we are going to turn them or provide care to them. I will do their bath last, and hopefully, it will be after my shift ends."
