How could Markopolos and the other whistleblowers have gotten action on their concerns earlier than they did? Did Markopolos act ethically at all times? Markopolos and the other whistleblowers initially tried to get through to the SEC about their concerns with Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme. Markopolos submitted extensive paper work and multiple tips over the course of several years to the SEC trying to get them to open an investigation. Unfortunately, the SEC never moved forward with any of the whistleblowing that was coming to them. The SEC was the only commission Markopolos and the other whistleblowers revealed their concerns to about Bernie Madoff. Due to the fact that the SEC was not moving forward with any investigations Markopolos and the other whistleblowers could have gone forward with their claims to other federal agencies. The FBI would have been the second best choice for the whistleblowers to try and tip off. According to Markopolos, he did not feel he would have been credible to the FBI due to the way the SEC was handling his information. Talking to media and informing the public could have also been another action taken by the whistleblowers, but without knowledge of what the outcome would have been moving forward, it seemed as if the SEC was the safest and best option. Markopolos was first asked to investigate Bernie Madoff by his boss who was a direct competitor of Madoff. It appeared as if Markopolos boss was asking him to figure out how Bernie Madoff was so successful so Markopolos boss can try and replicate his strategies. While we don't know how Markopolos obtained the information used to formulate his findings, there has been no sign that Markopolos obtained the information unethically. Markopolos soon figured that Bernie Madoff's numbers didn't add up. Markopolos was driven to blow the whistle on his conclusions. In the end, Markopolos did act ethically in the process of whistleblowing to the SEC. Markopolos could have looked the other way, or worse even begin his own Ponzi scheme
