How do I reply to this post?
I thoroughly enjoyed The Science of Emotions with Jaak Panksepp. Something he emphasized throughout the whole video is that if we took the emotions of animals seriously, we could understand our own emotions. He went on to explain that if we understood our own emotions, we would have a better understanding of how to develop the right medications. That made a lot of sense to me after he explained this and it also validated my own personal thoughts. I have always appreciated the simplicity of animals and how they do not seem to care as much about things that we do care about. This video made me think about what I read in Chapter 7. There was a passage that talked about how humans are far more complex due to them having more attitude and mental processes. They went on to talk about consistency pressures and how humans make that a big part of their life whereas animals do not.
Panksepp mentioned that animals have seven primal emotions. These primal emotions are seeking, rage, fear, lust, care, panic, and play. Panksepp mentioned that back in the 90s, he did an experiment where he tickled rats to see if they had a response and he found that they were laughing and enjoyed it. At first this sounded crazy to me but as he explained why, I was intrigued. This study was useful because it led to courses of action for treatment in people who have depression. Depression can lead to opioid addictions because it can mimic the same feelings that one would feel when being comforted by their mother. Due to that, scientists are trying to find alternative that are non-addictive and have little to no side effects. I had not heard about some of the treatments being explored and found it surprising. The most surprising treatment was Deep Brain Stimulation being used for the Seeking System to elevate capacity enthusiasm. I would have loved for him to go into more detail about how it works. At the end of the presentation, he mentioned that there was an injection called GLYX-13 that they are testing on people with depression. It is supposed to have has no poisonous properties and not addictive. I am interested to see what comes of this injection and if it becomes popular.
