How do we define the term 'public safety'? For our purposes, the term public safety refers to maintaining a peaceful and safe society (community), protected from risks such as crime, terrorism, etc. Throughout this course, we will examine topics related to public safety. Topics such as human trafficking, organized crime, and emerging issues facing public safety entiteis will be examined.

In this assignment, identify a significant public safety issue in your specific community. In order to identify your issue, conduct research into various resources available.

What is occuring now that impacts your community, our society, and law enforcement?

Identify the issue and explain why it is an issue in your community.

How does it affect/impact the community?

How does this issue impact law enforcement? What is your local law enforcement agencies reponse to this issue?

For examples, visit the websites for your local Police Services Board, your local police service, or information from your local news outlet (be it print, online, social media source such as an agency's Twitter feed).

Think outside the box - a public safety issue impacts community and broader society. For ideas, review the Addendum to see examples of significant public safety in the weekly issues/topics.

An important note - your significant public safety issue will have impacts on your community. Do not write about local traffic issues, or relatively minor maters. During this course, the theme is significant issues.
