How do you make career decisions? There are many different theories on how one decides on a career or when to make a change. There are four main theories that can be present when one is deciding about starting or changing careers. The four theories are as follows.

Social-cognitive theory: As a social being, important people in your life can influence your career decisions by encouraging you, or you can learn about options by watching others in various careers. Decisions are also based on our self-efficacy, which refers to whether you believe you can successfully achieve a task.

Values-based theory: Your cultural and work values strongly influence your career decisions.

Happenstance theory: Planned and unplanned events influence your career decisions. It is recommended to be open to experiences and seek out new opportunities.

Person-environment fit: Career decisions are based on your personality and interests.
