Membrane adsorbers are used in the production of protein-based therapeutics which can be used to treat autoimmune diseases and as targeting vectors for cancer treatments. A typical feed to a membrane adsorber column will contain 0.5mg/mL of protein (IgG) and 150mMNaCl. As a process engineer at Renner Pharmaceuticals, you are responsible for designing the initial process. Equilibrium adsorption data for the commercial membrane adsorber is provided from the manufacturer and summarized below in Figure 1. A) If a membrane adsorber column contains 1g of membrane, estimate how much protein will be captured if the column is run to overload (i.e. 100% breakthrough or C/Co=1 ). You may assume the volumetric flowrate is low, e.g. 1mL/min. You may assume the density of the polymer membrane is 1 g/mL B) In an attempt to make the process more time efficient, you want to operate the same column at a higher flowrate. Describe a set of experiments you would perform to determine the upper limit of operation. Use metrics discussed in class. C) Why is there a maximum operable flowrate for membrane adsorbers? What characteristics about the membrane and/or membrane process will dictate the upper limit
