How much sleep do college students get on a typical night?
Some say that getting 8 hours of sleep per night is ideal. Being college students (and having additional responsibilities outside of the classroom), this might not always be the case.
Let's assume that college students get 8 hours of sleep per night.
To investigate whether or not this may be true, a researcher collects 50 samples (each of size 30) from a population of college students. You can find these samples in the link below. The data values are the number of hours of sleep on a typical night for the students in the sample.
Week #7 Discussion Sample Data
Randomly select one of these 50 samples and answer the questions below in your discussion post.
For the sample you selected:
- Record the sample number
- Calculate the mean of your sample
- Calculate the standard deviation of your sample.
- If your sample mean is different than 8 hours, does this mean that you should be convinced that the typical number of hours of sleep for a college student (i.e., the population mean) is not 8 hours? What are two possible explanations for why your sample mean is less than (or more than) 8 hours?
- Let's say you calculate the mean and standard deviation of another sample. What sample mean might convince you that perhaps college students are not getting 8 hours of sleep per night? (There's no right or wrong answer.)
