As a therapist or counsellor, I need to encompass several other key factors outside of boundaries of competence in my everyday standard of practice maintain as well as continue to develop my professional competency. These key factors are : (1) continually daily use of a supervisor to review all client sessions, assessment results and treatment plans as well as to discuss treatment plans that arise (2) Lifelong learning practices independently seeking ongoing professional development (reading current research articles, attending conferences and training for psychologist, etc ) (3) Professional support network to discuss ethical issues and create new ideas for treatment in counselling (4) accurate subjective detail documentation of clients sessions ( statements of clients, assessments, and treatment plans, goal setting and steps taken in each session to reach these goals) (5) Critical thinking skills and problem solving abilities ( to match the Alberta code of ethics and standards of practice in daily work with clients ) (6) Ability to self-reflect, accept constructive criticism to ensure ongoing growth and expertise in the field (7) Interpersonal communication skills ( to build a strong therapeutic professional relationship with clients) (8) cultural sensitivity and knowledge in order to help clients not only in therapeutic treatment but for the client to engage in the informed consent process as well as comprehend confidentiality rules and exceptions as outlined in the code of ethics and standards of practice (9) Extensive Knowledge of the code of ethic and standards of practices for Alberta and for Canada as well as the ability to integrate this knowledge to prevent and act competently as a professional when an ethical issue arise.
