As a medical biller or coder, it is important to know about HCPCS codes and what they are used for. These codes are used to report supplies, equipment, and other devices provided to a patient during medical treatment. There are some procedures that are also included in the HCPCS coding that are not part of the CPT coding system. HCPCS codes are codes for items and services that primarily include nonphysician-based services such as ambulatory services both by air and ground. These codes are used to facilitate the processing of health insurance claims by Medicare and other insurers. HCPCS codes are divided into two subsystems, Level I and Level II. Level I is used for identifying medical services and procedures provided by physicians and other healthcare professionals while Level II is primarily used to report what a provider used during an item or service. HCPCS is such an important part of reimbursement, quality review, benchmarking measurements, and the collection of medical statistical data.

While both HCPCS codes and CPT codes are used to create a standardized and uniform language for all the healthcare industry in order for reimbursement, they do differ in what they are used for. The difference in HCPCS coding and the other coding systems is the purpose of HCPCS codes are used to provide a system for reporting the medical services that are received by Medicare beneficiaries and used for billing, insurance, and more provided for the patient, while CPT coding is used for describing and reporting the services performed by the physician to a patient. These coding systems even if different still work together.

An example of a Level I HCPCS code would be 90716 which coders use to note the administration of varicella or the chicken pox vaccine. A Level II HCPCS code would be R0070 which is used to code transportation of personnel and portable x-ray equipment to a nursing home or individual homes of a patient. Level II service include ambulance services and durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies when used outside of a physician's office.
