The diversion programs offered through the juvenile court system allow for court intervention of offenses committed by juveniles in a manner other than incarceration. The purpose of diversion is to intervene at a level as to prevent the juvenile from entering further into the juvenile justice process, therefore being labeled and having a stigma attached to them going forward (Siegel & Welsh, 2017). There is plenty of discussion when it comes to the effectiveness of diversion in a juvenile's future choices to engage in delinquent behavior. One of the biggest challenges with anything in law enforcement is measuring prevention efforts. It is easy to pull statistics on crime and show how many arrests have been made in reference to a specific type of crime. But how do we pull statistics on what a program or enforcement effort has prevented? This is the same problem with diversion, how can we show that a juvenile made a better choice after having gone through diversion other than recidivism rates. The textbook references how the diversion program has been a core element in limiting incarceration rates of juveniles while the young adult incarceration numbers drastically increased over the same three-decade period (Siegel & Walsh, 2017). One factor that has been looked at when it comes to the effectiveness of juvenile diversion is parent participation in the process. In a 2021 article by Magidson and Kidd, found that diversion programs where parents were involved with the juvenile's diversionary process increased the social bond within the family allowing for a longer lasting effect (Magidson & Kidd, 2021). As discussed in previous discussion boards the involvement of a parent providing support and encouragement to their children increases the likelihood of reducing delinquent behavior. 1 Timothy tells us, "Let no one despise your youth; instead; you should be an example to the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity" (Holman Christian Standard Bible, 2004, 1 Timothy 4:12). Parents who involve themselves in the life of their kids and set that example of what is right can affect their children's lives tremendously.
