Probably one of the biggest pivots was the company formally known as Odeo, now know as Twitter. Before the giant social media platform became a house hold name, Twitter was Odeo a podcasting venture. The three men kept a close eye on the market and in 2005, when Apple announced that they were going to add podcasts to itunes, the leadership team for Twitter decided they needed to pivot, knowing they would not be able to compete. In 2006 the first tweet was sent, based on an SMS side project the team was working on. From there, following the monetizing model of Facebook, Twitter launched "Promoted Tweets", and from there they were able to turn a profit from the platform. Today twitter is used all over the world as a social media, marketing, and publicity platform. This would not have been possible without the crucial pivot the team made, due to keeping a pulse on the market at the time.
